CANDACES

TRANSMEDIA, BRAZIL, 2017

Candaces is a project of four performances created by six black women, artists, and residents of Curitiba, a city in South of Brazil. The performances happened between the 10th and 14th August of 2016 in four different locations of the city. Bea Gerolin, Carla Torres, Geisa Costa, Janine Mathias, Pretícia Jerônimo and Pri Pontes proposed a dialogue with the public on issues that permeate memory, justice, struggle and resistance, in order to look to the future from the rescue of their ancestry. The artists were inspired by the history of the Candaces, the queens of the African royalty in the antiquity time. They were women who exercised political, social and cultural functions by assuming full power in the Kush Empire in the ancient Nubia. Exalting the load of their ancestors, the six artists reunite different artistic paths. In a process of collective creation through a research on designing, singing, dancing, acting, photographing and filming, they rescued the Afro-Brazilian aesthetic identity to give life to the current issues they carry in the place where they live: Curitiba, a city that denies its history and its African heritage.
